Parent Guidance
This guide will help you prepare your child for their evaluation.
Before the Visit
- Ensure your child gets a full night's sleep
- Provide a healthy breakfast with protein
- Bring snacks and a water bottle
What to Say
✓ DO say:
- "We're going to meet someone who wants to learn how your brain works best"
- "You'll do different brain activities like puzzles with words and pictures." If it's relevant for your visit: "you'll also do some things that feel a bit like school — like reading, writing, and math."
- "You can take breaks whenever you need"
- "I'll be in the room right next door the whole time"
What NOT to Say
✗ AVOID saying:
- "This is a test"
- "You need to get the answers right"
- "Don't be nervous"
- "You'll be playing games"
(While we work hard to make the evaluation experience feel warm, supportive, and engaging for children, we generally avoid describing the activities as 'games,' since some tasks may feel more structured or challenging than a child might expect from play.)
After the Visit
- Let your child decompress — testing is cognitively tiring
- Plan a calm, easy evening
- Praise effort, not performance
- Follow up with Dr. Rollet as scheduled
